Funded Research Projects: SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Center for Advanced Forestry Systems: Phase II

Research Sponsored By: National Science Foundation (NSF)
Principal Investigator: Eric Turnblom
Project Description
This project will continue the University of Washington's participation in Center for Advanced Forestry Systems (CAFS) created in 2007 under NSF’s I/UCRC program with four forestry Universities; North Carolina State University (NCSU) – Lead Institution, Oregon State University (OSU), Purdue University (PU), and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU) as founding members. The University of Washington joined CAFS in 2009 and the Center now also includes The University of Florida, University of Georgia, and University of Maine. During CAFS Phase I, the UW established projects in partnership with multiple universities and industry to examine the effects of 1) forest fertilization, 2) growth, yield, and wood quality of genetically improved stock, and 3) the utility of remotely sensed data to inform the production of Douglas-fir forests. Collaborations formed with scientists and industry partners will be expanded on in Phase II of funding.
